The literature which has been specially written for infotainment – ‘information-based entertainment’ of children and young adults is commonly known as Children’s Literature or Juvenile Literature. This literature is simple and straightforward and have children characters in them.
Authors writing books for children tend to use fantasy and fanciful ideas to ignite the interest and imagination of the young children. The entire literature is designed from the point of view of a child.
Blessed with the heritage of Indus-Sarasvati civilization, the largest civilization in the ancient world developed in the Indus Valley of India over 12,000 years ago (present India and Pakistan), possibly the oldest surviving collection of Indian fables – Panchatantra – anthropomorphic political treatise – was written around 200BC by Pandit Vishnu Sharma. He was a Sanskrit scholar and the official Guru of the then prince of Kashi. He wrote Panchatantra to teach political science to his royal disciples.
However, the western world, it could start only by the end of the 18th century. Perhaps as many as 50 children’s books were being printed each year, mostly in London. John Newbery is credited to be the Father of Children’s Literature. His first book was A Little Pretty Pocket-Book Intended for the Instruction and Amusement of Little Master Tommy and Pretty Miss Polly (c.1744).
Even since, this genre of literature has only grown and grown. In the present twenty-first century, we live in a golden age of children literature, when books ostensibly written for teens are equally adored by readers of every generation.
