‘Mango and the Teak’ is one of the 17 storybooks in ‘The Grandma Earth Series’, conceptualized and developed by Prof (Dr) Shalini Verma ‘Lifoholic’ – Founder of Samvaw Foundation and published by Books33 (A Unit of Aadya Green Gifting Pvt. Ltd.).

The Grandma Earth Series has been highly appreciated by one and all – celebrities, social entrepreneurs, impact champions, civil societies & NGOs, academicians, parents and teachers. Pheroza J. Godrej – Chairperson – Godrej Archives Council & Godrej Mangroves and Executive Board Member – Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development International Advisory Council – says, “What a wonderful idea it is to embark on a venture of creating 17 different stories, each story book crafted to be based on one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the United Nations! This brilliant endeavour by the publishers – Books33 and SAMVAW Foundation – to implant the seeds of sustainable living in young, tender minds …”.

In the words of Dr. Snehal Padhye – Director – Technical Strategy, Crown Biosciences, “The moral of each story is very pertinent and deeply rooted in our all-inclusive culture and the theme of India’s G20 presidency “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”, that translates to “One Earth, One Family, One Future.” Indeed, a fun read for one and all!

The objective of this series is to make young children in the age group of 3-8 years aware about the Mission LiFE & 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As recommended by NEP 2020, STORYTELLING pedagogy has been adopted throughout this series “to engage and strengthen the Foundational Learning of the children of the age group 3-8 years going to Anganwadi/pre-school/Balvatika or class 1 & 2 of regular schools”.

Written by Pooja Gupta Mahurkar, illustrated by Ganesh Mhatre and designed by Shamim Nida, ‘Mango and the Teak’ is based on SDG 10 – ‘Reduced Inequalities’.  The story, set in the backdrop of Chhatrapati Shivaji’s Maratha empire, revolves around the two great friends – Mango and the Teak and their bitter-sweet relationships.

In the heartening words of Dr Krishna M – Head of Department & Associate Professor – Department of Economics & Finance, Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, Rajasthan, “There are storybooks on various themes for children, such as courage, patience, confidence and so on. What sets Pooja’s book – ‘Mango and the Teak’ apart is that it teaches young minds the essential element of equality. The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 10) of equality has remained a topic of concern. However, this is a beautiful attempt when the importance of equality is being conveyed to children through a story with a historical background. The author deserves accolades for her attempt”.
